Masterpieces of Bamboo Art
Katsushiro Sōhō and Fujinuma Noboru

Exhibition period October 31 – December 20. 2020

Tochigi Prefecture’s Living National Treasures include two who are experts in bamboo art, Katsushiro Sōhō (b. 1934) and Fujinuma Noboru (b. 1945). The presence of these two Living National Treasures in Tochigi is evidence of the high level of bamboo art in Tochigi, which along with Oita Prefecture, is famous as a place where that art flourishes.
While showcasing these two artists, this exhibition presents work by other artists renowned as the originators of bamboo art. In addition to Iizuka Hōsai II and Iizuka Rōkansai, these include other artists named Living National Treasures: Shōno Shōunsai (1904-1974), Iizuka Shōkansai (1919-2004), Maeda Chikubōsai II (1917-2003), and Hayakawa Shōkosai V. They are joined by other artists who active throughout the country. With nearly a hundred works in all, the exhibition introduces what bamboo art has become, an art form in which bamboo’s vitality resonates overseas as well as in Japan.
