The meaning of the title and theme

_

KOBORI Tomoto
"SANO Ryohaku listening to the Tale of the Heike"
c.1929

Exhibition period October 25 - December 21, 2025

The term "gadai" has two main meanings. One refers to the title of the work, and the other refers to the theme depicted in the work. Typically, the name of the theme depicted is used as the title of the work, but sometimes the title alone does not convey the depth of the theme, and titles like "Untitled" are often given as well. In this exhibition, we will explore the relationship between the titles given to artworks and their themes, and seek to uncover what "gadai" means.
