OSAKABE Jin (1906-1978) was a painter born in Tochigi. He entered the Western painting department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School and studied under Eisaku Wada, and while still a student, he exhibited his portraits at the Teiten and other exhibitions. However, Osakabe's interest gradually shifted to landscapes. In 1946, a year after the end of the WWII, Osaabe's study trips with the painter Heizo Kanayama had a great impact on his development as a landscape painter.
Osakabe produced many landscape paintings in various locations of Japan, but at the root of his work was his admiration for 19th century French art, especially that of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) and other landscape painters. It is said that when his work was awarded a special prize at the 4th Nitten, some of the jurors pointed out the similarities between his work and Courbet's. In light of these remarks, this exhibition introduces two works by Gustave Courbet from the collection of the National Museum of Western Art(Tokyo), as well as a work by Osakabe from the collection of Tochigi prefectural museum of fine arts.
