Yamanaka Nobuo did pioneering work in visual media expression by employing 16mm film projection and pinhole photography.
This work was produced on Liberty Island, a noted sightseeing spot in New York, in May 1980. He made a contact print of a film taken without a lens using a pinhole camera. Record that the exposure time was fifteen minutes remains. The sunlight ring reflecting diffusely on the inside of the tiny pinhole opened in the copper sheet seems to divide the viewer of this work and the world outside into two.
Yamanaka, who produced works with a high degree of perfection in an extremely simple method, died in Manhattan overlooking the Statue of Liberty at the young age of thirty-four.
